How to quote a freelance project
A good quote is built from the work, not from a number that “feels right”. Break the project into tasks, estimate hours for each, and multiply by your rate. Then adjust for the things that always happen:
- Revision buffer. Clients ask for changes. A 10–20% buffer pays for them without arguing over every round.
- Rush fee. If the deadline means late nights or moving other clients, charge for it — 25–50% is common.
- Platform fee. On Fiverr or Upwork, gross up the quote so the fee comes out of the client's price, not your pocket.
- Deposit. Asking for 30–50% upfront on direct clients protects you if a project stalls.
